MJP Workshop | A Thanksgiving Inspired Photoshoot

If I look to when I first graduated college, I never would of fathomed that one day I would be running my own business, own my own studio and also be teaching budding photographers on how to create a successful photography business. These are all things that I dreamed of and hoped to obtain one day, and I feel so lucky that my dreams are becoming a reality. A photographer’s job is so much more than taking pretty photos. We are documenting memories that may otherwise be forgotten, as well as capturing moments that can be held on to forever. I am also a strong believer in creating a community versus being competitive with other photographers. The Rising Tide Society uses the quote “a rising tide lifts all boats,” and this could not be more true. Instead of being jealous or bitter towards my competitors, I am happy for their successes. This has lifted a burden off my soul and in exchange made me a much happier person. I have no problem sharing “my secrets,” or explaining how I do things, because in the end everyone is their own person and will do it in their own way. I am most competitive with myself, and my drive to succeed is always chasing the goals I set for myself. I have made so many amazing friends in the process, friends who know exactly what I am going through when I have a rough day and that are happy for my victories. By thinking like this, and running our businesses this way, we are raising the industry standard.

Last week in my new studio, I taught a workshop to a group of incredibly talented girls. We discussed the ins and outs of running a photography business and finished the day with a beautiful styled shoot. One of my favorite couples, Amanda and James, volunteered to model and had us laughing the entire shoot. They were married in Texas last April and it’s always so wonderful to get to see them again. Lauren, with Just Lovely Weddings, styled the most stunning fall harvest tablescape full of berries, pears and rich velvets. She did beautiful calligraphy on kraft paper with one of her favorite love quotes, surrounded by candles to set the mood. Our very own Sara, who also owns Emerald Pie Bar, made yummy macaroons and berry tarts, and in lieu of a cake, a delectable pie. Perfect for Thanksgiving. Adri, of The Flower Company, put together the most jawdropping floral arrangements, full of rich autumn colors, with protea, eucalyptus and burgundy cremons. Amanda sported a matching floral piece in her hair with simple yet elegant makeup by the talented Genica Lee. She looked breathtaking in a Maggie Sottero long sleeve gown, James equally as dapper in a navy suit from The Black Tux.

A HUGE thank you to all the talented vendors that donated their time to make this shoot happen. To all the workshop attendees who trusted me enough to come sit with us for a couple hours and learn something new. And to my amazing gal squad, Sarah and Sara for all of your help, without you it wouldn’t have been possible!
